1. Memory Card – SanDisk 64GB Extreme Pro 300MB/s
The SanDisk 64GB Extreme Pro UHS-II is your best UHS-II choice if you want the fastest writing and reading speeds. Since the a7R III is UHS-II compatible, you’ll want the fastest in order to send/write big files coming from the 42MP sensor. The a7R III has 2 x SD slots, and only the first one is UHS-II compatible though! If you currently have a UHS-I card, you can continue using it as you won’t see any in-camera improvements.
It’s super-fast, reliable and has more than enough capacity for thousands of shots and 4K videos (from 32GB to 128GB). SanDisk has always been number one brand for memory cards.
You can buy it at Amazon or see more reviews here.
ADDITIONAL CHOICE: We also really like the Lexar Professional 64GB SDXC UHS-II card. It’s a great card from a great brand. The performance isn’t quite as good as the SanDisk but the trade off might be worth the price difference.
You can buy is at Amazon or see more reviews here.
2. Battery – Sony NP-FZ100
The Sony a7R III uses the Sony NP-FZ100 battery. Even though the new a7R III has much better battery life than its predecessor, and most other mirrorless cameras, we still recommend you get at least 1 extra battery. When traveling or simply doing long photo shoots, you really don’t want a low battery to be reason you’re missing out on your shots (or potential earnings).
For traveling, weddings or any long photo shoots, having more than 1 is a must. Batteries can fail (rare, but better to be safe), and you should be prepared for this. If you only take pictures once a year, then this investment is not worth it, but if photography is a big hobby/job to you, you’ll allow yourself to worry less when taking pictures when you won’t have the time to wait 2-3 hours for a full charge.
You can buy it at Amazon or see more reviews here.
3. Flash – Sony HVL-F43AM
For portraits, weddings, studio or even close sports photography, the Sony HVL-F43M is the best flash for your money. It’s not the cheapest (but costs as much as same-rank flash units from other brands), but if you’ve used cheaper flashes before and know what you need, this is it.
If you want something cheaper, check out the Neewer TT560 here.
4. Tripod – Zomei 55″ Compact Tripod
For landscape, architecture, studio and nighttime photography, you need a tripod. The Zomei 55″ is affordable and provides good height, support and max load. As soon as you start shooting with slow shutter speeds (below 1/30) you will want one, as tripods are the only way to get sharp results.
The Zomei 55″ extends to a maximum of 4.92ft (150cm), weighs 2.6Lb (1.2kg) and supports a max weight of 11Lb (5kg). It’s made of aluminum alloy and is compact to carry around.
If you want to shoot fireworks or do some light painting, you also need a tripod. The Sony a7R III is so small and light that these two items are perfect together. There are more expensive and better tripods available, but if you just need something reliable and good for now and then, the Zomei tripod is great.
You can buy it at Amazon or see more reviews here.
ADDITIONAL CHOICE: Another great option is the JOILCAN 65″ Compact Light Weight Travel Tripod. Both are sold by the same brand even though they have different names. The JOILCAN will give you a bit more height but is slightly heavier and the extra height translates to about 1″ more length when folded up. Prices are pretty much comparable so really either is a great choice.
You can buy it at Amazon or see more reviews here.
5. Light Reflector – Neewer 43″ 5-in-1 Collapsible Light Reflector
Are you into portrait/wedding photography? Besides a good flash, you’ll want to have the Neewer 5-in-1 Light Reflector that allows you to bounce the light from white, silver, gold or black surfaces.
Even if you don’t have a flash, you can bounce the sun light nicely onto your subject and achieve much more professional looking shots, with warm colors. Alternatively, you can use it for product photography. It costs less than $20 and is truly worth it.
You can buy it at Amazon or see more reviews here.
6. Remote Control – Sony RM-VPR1
It’s hard to find a reliable remote control. Luckily, Sony offers the Sony RM-VPR1 for an affordable price and it works perfectly on pretty much 99% Sony digital cameras.
This is a wired remote control, perfect for when you don’t want any shake on your shots (even pressing the shutter button can create some, especially if shooting with a slow shutter speed). Studios, product shots, long exposure or nighttime photography are just some of the situations where it’s usable.
You can buy it at Amazon or see more reviews here.
7. Battery Grip – Sony VG-C3 EM
The Sony VG-C3EM battery grip fits on the a7R III as well as A9.
These are the 3 most common reasons why you should get a grip:
- 2 x Battery slots, meaning you can double your shooting time
- If you find the a7R III too light/small and want better overall grip and stability
- If you often shoot vertically and want to have a 2nd shutter button on the grip (better for vertical photography)
The grip also sports a few buttons you can find on the back of the camera. It’s also dust and moisture-resistant!
You can buy it at Amazon or see more reviews here.
8. Dual Battery Charger – Newmowa Dual USB Charger
After you buy a second NP-FZ100 battery, make sure to get this super cheap Newmowa Dual USB charger that can fit 2 batteries.
We don’t normally recommend third-party accessories that have anything to do with batteries or chargers, but this one works really well!
You can buy it at Amazon or see more reviews here.
